Privacy Policy
Effective Date: June 21, 2026
Last Updated: June 21, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how Flashcard Chess ("Flashcard Chess", "we", "us", or "our") collects, uses, shares, and protects information about you when you use the website at www.flashcardchess.net (the "Site"), the Flashcard Chess add-on for Anki (the "Add-on"), and related features and services (together, the "Service"). Please read it together with our Terms of Service.
By using the Service, you agree to the practices described in this Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.
1. Who We Are
Flashcard Chess operates the Site and the Add-on, which let registered users upload, share, browse, rate, bookmark, subscribe to, and comment on flashcard decks (primarily chess study material for the Anki spaced-repetition system), and which may offer courses. For privacy questions, contact us at flashcardchess@gmail.com.
2. Information We Collect
### 2.1 Information You Provide
- Account information. When you register, we collect your email address, your chosen username, and a password. Passwords are stored in a hashed (not plain-text) form by our authentication provider.
- Profile information. Any optional information you add to your profile, such as a bio.
- Content you submit. The decks and files you upload, along with deck titles, descriptions, and tags; comments, ratings, bookmarks, and subscriptions; and reports you file about other content.
- Communications. Messages you send us through the contact form or by email, including their contents and any information you choose to include.
- Payment information (for paid features). If and when you purchase paid content, your payment is handled by our third-party payment processor. We do not collect or store your full payment card number; we may receive limited information such as a confirmation of payment, the last digits or type of card, and billing details necessary to provide the purchase.
### 2.2 Information We Collect Automatically
When you use the Service, we and our service providers may automatically collect:
- Log and usage data, such as your IP address, the pages or features you access, the dates and times of your activity, referring pages, and actions you take (for example, uploading or syncing a deck).
- Device and connection information, such as your browser type, operating system, and device identifiers, and, for the Add-on, basic technical information needed to synchronize your decks.
- Cookies and similar technologies, as described in Section 4.
### 2.3 Information From Third Parties
We may receive limited information from our service providers, such as our payment processor (confirmation and status of a transaction) and our hosting and security providers (for example, information used to protect the Service against abuse).
3. How We Use Information
We use the information we collect to:
- create and manage your account and authenticate you;
- operate, provide, maintain, and improve the Service, including hosting and displaying content and enabling community features;
- enable you to upload, share, download, and synchronize decks and to use the Add-on;
- process and deliver paid content and handle related transactions;
- communicate with you, including sending account-related and service-related messages such as password-reset links and important notices (we will not send you unrelated marketing email without your consent where consent is required);
- maintain the safety, security, and integrity of the Service, including detecting, preventing, and responding to fraud, abuse, security incidents, and violations of our Terms;
- moderate content and respond to reports and support requests;
- understand how the Service is used, in aggregate, to improve it; and
- comply with legal obligations and enforce our agreements.
4. Cookies and Similar Technologies
We use cookies and similar technologies that are necessary to operate the Service — for example, to keep you logged in and to maintain your session and security. We and our providers may also use cookies to help protect the Service against malicious traffic and to improve performance. You can set your browser to refuse some or all cookies, but parts of the Service may not function properly if you do.
Note that decks and descriptions submitted by users may contain links to, or images hosted on, third-party servers. When your browser loads such content, those third parties may learn your IP address and may set their own cookies. We do not control those third parties.
5. Legal Bases for Processing (EEA/UK Users)
If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, we process your personal data on the following legal bases:
- Performance of a contract — to provide the Service you request, including managing your account and delivering content you purchase.
- Legitimate interests — to operate, secure, and improve the Service, prevent abuse, and communicate with you, where these interests are not overridden by your rights.
- Consent — where we ask for it (for example, for certain optional features); you may withdraw consent at any time.
- Legal obligation — to comply with applicable law.
6. How We Share Information
We do not sell your personal information. We share information only as described here:
- Service providers (sub-processors). We rely on third parties to run the Service, who process information on our behalf under appropriate confidentiality and security obligations. These currently include our hosting, database, authentication, and file-storage provider (Supabase), our website hosting and content-delivery provider (Vercel), and, for paid features, our payment processor (Stripe). These providers may process and store data in data centers located in various countries.
- Other users. Content you choose to make public — such as your username, the decks you share, and your comments and ratings — is visible to other users of the Service. Please do not include information in public content that you do not want others to see.
- Legal and safety. We may disclose information if we believe in good faith that it is necessary to comply with a law, regulation, legal process, or governmental request; to enforce our Terms; to detect, prevent, or address fraud, security, or technical issues; or to protect the rights, property, or safety of Flashcard Chess, our users, or the public.
- Business transfers. If we are involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization, sale of assets, or bankruptcy, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. The successor entity will be required to honor this Policy or provide notice of any material change.
7. Third-Party Links and Services
The Service may contain links to third-party websites and services (for example, YouTube, AnkiWeb, a donation provider, or links embedded in user-submitted decks). This Policy does not apply to those third parties, and we are not responsible for their content or privacy practices. We encourage you to review their policies before providing them with information.
8. Data Retention
We retain your personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service, and afterward as necessary to comply with our legal obligations, resolve disputes, prevent abuse, and enforce our agreements. When you delete your account, we will delete or de-identify your personal information associated with it, except that some information may remain in backups, caches, or logs for a limited period, and we may retain information where required or permitted by law.
9. Security
We take reasonable measures designed to protect your information, such as encrypting data in transit, storing passwords in hashed form, restricting access, and keeping our systems reasonably up to date. However, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. You are responsible for keeping your password confidential.
10. International Data Transfers
We and our service providers may process and store your information in countries other than the one in which you live, including the United States and others, where data-protection laws may differ from those in your jurisdiction. Where required, we take steps to ensure that transfers of personal data receive an adequate level of protection.
11. Children's Privacy
The Service is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are under 18 (or the age of majority where you live), you may use the Service only with the involvement of a parent or guardian. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us at flashcardchess@gmail.com and we will take steps to delete it.
12. Your Rights and Choices
Depending on where you live, you may have some or all of the following rights regarding your personal information:
- Access a copy of the personal information we hold about you;
- Correct inaccurate or incomplete information;
- Delete your personal information (you can delete your account at any time from your account settings);
- Port certain information to another service;
- Object to or restrict certain processing; and
- Withdraw consent where processing is based on consent.
EEA/UK users may also lodge a complaint with their local data-protection supervisory authority.
California residents have the right to know what personal information we collect, use, and disclose; to request deletion or correction of their personal information; and not to be discriminated against for exercising their rights. We do not sell or "share" personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising as those terms are defined under California law.
To exercise any of these rights, contact us at flashcardchess@gmail.com or use the account controls on the Site. We may need to verify your identity before acting on your request, and we will respond as required by applicable law. You may use an authorized agent where the law permits.
13. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the "Last Updated" date above and may provide additional notice, such as a message on the Site or, where appropriate, by email. Your continued use of the Service after the changes take effect constitutes your acceptance of the updated Policy.
